International pax to/from Australia up 4% to 2.6 million in Oct-2012, cargo up 3%
Australia's Bureau of Infrastructure, Transport and Regional Economics (BITRE) reports (10-Jan-2013) the following international traffic highlights to/from Australia in Oct-2012:
- Passenger numbers: 2.6 million, +4.0% year-on-year;
- Available seats: 3.3 million, +2.4%;
- Flights: 13,426, +1.1%;
- Cargo volume: 76,743 tonnes, +2.9%;
- Aircraft movements: 14,264, +2.4%;
- Top 10 international carriers:
- Share of passengers carried:
- Qantas: 17.3%, -0.2 ppt;
- Singapore Airlines: 9.2%, +0.3 ppt;
- Virgin Australia: 8.7%, -0.2 ppt;
- Jetstar: 8.5%, +0.4 ppt;
- Emirates: 8.3%, +0.2 ppt;
- Air New Zealand: 8.0%, -0.9 ppt;
- Cathay Pacific: 4.4%, -0.8 ppt;
- Malaysia Airlines: 3.7%, -0.2 ppt;
- Thai Airways: 3.5%, +0.4 ppt;
- AirAsia X: 3.1%, +1.1 ppts;
- Share of cargo carried:
- Qantas: 15.8%, -1.0 ppts;
- Singapore Airlines: 15.2%, -1.4 ppts;
- Emirates: 13.2%, +2.7 ppts;
- Cathay Pacific: 8.4%, -1.5 ppts;
- Malaysia Airlines: 6.2%, +0.1 ppt;
- Air New Zealand: 4.9%, -0.2 ppt;
- Thai Airways: 3.9%, -1.2 ppts;

BITRE also reported low-cost carriers AirAsia X, Indonesia AirAsia, Jetstar, Jetstar Asia, Tiger Airways and Scoot accounted for 14.8% of total international passenger traffic to/from Australia in Oct-2012. LCC share in Oct-2011 was 19.4%. The decrease of 4.6 ppts from Oct-2011 to Oct-2012 is mainly due to Pacific Blue and Polynesian Blue being counted as LCCs to Nov-2011 while for Dec-2011 and onwards, the rebranded Virgin Australia and Virgin Samoa are not counted as LCCs.
