Bureau of Infrastructure and Transport Research Economics (BITRE)
About
The Bureau of Infrastructure and Transport Research Economics (BITRE) provides economic analysis, research and statistics on infrastructure, transport and regional development issues which help to inform Australian Government policy as well as develop wider community understanding. BITRE forms part of the Policy and Research Division of the Department of Infrastructure, Transport, Regional Development and Communications.
BITRE publishes widely on the topic of Australian transport and infrastructure, producing numerous reports on aviation, maritime, road and rail sectors. As part of this, the bureau also actively undertakes a series of unique data collections which are made available through its reports and its individual research projects.
The Bureau was established by Cabinet in 1970. Its role was to gather and analyse information about the transport industry and transport services. Today this role extends to analysis of trends and issues relating to infrastructure provision, cities and regional development.
