Digital Skies: How Technology is Reshaping Latin America's Aviation Landscape
Latin America's aviation sector is increasingly turning to cutting edge technologies to transform their operations, improve safety, solve workforce challenges and enhance efficiency and profitability. Regional airlines are already adopting AI-based systems for everything from aircraft maintenance to passenger service, pricing and revenue management. Digital transformation is no longer just a luxury of the region's largest players, it is increasingly becoming a necessity regardless of the size or role of the organisation. This session will focus on regional trends when it comes to the rapid development and adoption of digital technologies, looking at questions such as:
-
What regional aviation businesses are leading the technology transformation?
-
How are AI technologies actually changing operations?
-
Are younger, more aggressive regional LCCs better placed than their larger but better financed competitors to drive technology adoption?
-
While digital transformation promises much, it also comes with significant costs. Should the investment priorities be around cost reduction, problem solving, revenue generation or something else entirely?
-
What are the unique challenges in the region that have the potential to slow technology adoption?
CAPA Airline Leader Summit Latin America & Caribbean 2025 Highlights
CAPA - Centre for Aviation returned to Latin America in 2025 for the CAPA Airline Leader Summit Latin America & Caribbean. It was held in Lima, Peru on 9-10 September, the event is an integral part of CAPA's calendar of regional aviation summits.
The two-day event concentrated on the shifting competitive landscape for the region, as well as the unique challenges that airlines in Latin America & the Caribbean need to navigate. With momentum in regional travel markets varying widely between countries and diverging approaches to regulation, competition and aviation policy, the CAPA Airline Leader Summit Latin America & Caribbean helped equip attendees with the knowledge they need to understand regional aviation.
Regional regulatory approaches, taxation and economic balance
Latin America and the Caribbean encompass 29 countries with disparate governing philosophies, economic priorities and regulatory approaches. Cooperation and coordination between these governments is essential to ensuring the region has an air travel sector that is efficient, competitive and prepared for the future. Yet, barriers for the development of aviation keep creeping up, whether in the form of taxes and charges on travel, approaches to liberalisation and infrastructure or general bureaucratic inertia. This session will consider how to push forward regulation and government approaches that recognise aviation's vital role in connecting the region and in driving collaboration and economic activity.
Green Horizons: Transforming Aviation Sustainability Across Latin America
Latin American carriers have taken a forward-looking approach to sustainability, adopting wide-ranging strategies intended not only to minimise environmental impacts but also to support the communities they operate in and enhance relationships with customers, employees and suppliers. While this has generated substantial environmental and business benefits, it is seen as a cost centre for airlines, requiring purchasing of new aircraft, high-cost sustainable aviation fuel and adding yet more layers of complexity to an already difficult business. Yet, travellers within and to/from Latin America report overwhelmingly that sustainability is important in their travel decisions and influences their spending. This session will examine questions around regional aviation and sustainability, such as
-
Given the paucity of government frameworks and regulatory uncertainty, how do regional carriers establish and maintain sustainability programmes? What sort of feedback programmes are there to modify and adapt sustainability programmes?
-
While regional travellers overwhelmingly report sustainability is important to them, only a minority have shown willingness to actually purchase sustainable travel options. How do regional carriers incentivise green travel and narrow this say-do gap?
-
Is regional aviation better supported by voluntary commitments, or is there room for a regulatory-led approach? If so, should this take the place of mandates, targets or some other measure?
Resilient small island state aviation and tourism development – building aviation connectivity and tourism in the Caribbean
Tourism in the Caribbean has boomed in recent years, but travel to/from the region still largely depends on carriers based outside the region and their major hubs located elsewhere in the Americas. This reduces travel convenience and the overall attractiveness of the region as a tourist destination. Furthermore, Caribbean states face an increasing challenge in the form of climate change, with their delicate environments and important tourism sectors increasingly subject to disruption from severe weather events in recent years. This session will examine how the region's tourism-dependent small island states can build sustainability and resilience into their tourism and air travel sectors.

Growing intra-regional travel in the face of shifting travel preferences
Almost half of all international capacity in Latin America operates to other destinations within the region, and demand for intra-regional travel and tourism remains robust. Secondary cities and new travel hotspots are emerging, as regional travel preferences shift and capacity continues to expand. Even in the face of this growth, intra-regional travel still faces a variety of roadblocks - limited bilateral agreements, visa restrictions, onerous charges and broader economic and geopolitical challenges.
-
How are traveller preferences changing with Latin America and how do regional markets set themselves apart as a destination of choice?
-
Where are the strongest growth markets for intra-regional travel and what are some common features? Is there a threat of too much capacity being inserted into those markets?
-
Are the demands of intra-regional travellers different compared to intercontinental travellers?
-
With thousands of routes unserved or underserved with Latin America, who should take the lead in stimulating connectivity development?
-
How are airlines utilizing next generation aircraft on intra-regional routes?
