Qantas Group 'really excited about Japan': Head of commercial strategy

Qantas Group head of commercial strategy and performance Scott Zeglin, speaking at Routes Asia 2025, stated (25-Mar-2025) the Japan market has been "absolutely on fire" for travel from Australia. He added: "We're really excited about Japan". Mr Zeglin reported some recovery in demand from Japan, especially for travel to Queensland with a "joint effort" between Qantas Airways and Jetstar Airways in growing the market. He also commented: "We would love to be able to grow into Haneda", but added: "Slots have been a challenge".

Background ✨

Qantas faced challenges in expanding its Japan market due to blocked plans for a joint business with Japan Airlines, which would have benefited Queensland by enabling a direct route to Tokyo1. Despite this, Jetstar Japan continued to grow, with a notable brand presence and significant opportunities in the low-cost segment2 3. Qantas also sought regulatory approval to maintain unlimited capacity on the Japan route, emphasising its commitment to the market4.
