Chinese arrivals lead Australian tourism growth

Tourism Research Australia reported (07-Dec-2016) the following highlights from its International Visitor Survey for the year ending Sep-2016:

  • China:
    • Visitors: 1.1 million, +22% year-on-year;
    • Visitor nights: 43.2 million, +10%;
    • Visitor spend: AUD9.1 billion (USD6.8 billion), +18%;
  • US:
    • Visitors: 648,000, +18% to 648,000;
    • Visitor nights: 14.6 million, +14%;
    • Visitor spend: AUD3.7 billion (USD2.8 billion), +20%;
  • Japan:
    • Visitors: 365,000, +22%;
    • Visitor nights: 9.2 million, +5%;
    • Visitor spend: AUD1.6 billion (USD1.2 billion), +19%;
  • South Korea:
    • Visitors: 255,000, +29%;
    • Visitor nights: 13.8 million, +34%;
    • Visitor spend: AUD1.6 billion (USD1.2 billion), +34%;
  • UK:
    • Visitors: 667,000, +5%;
    • Visitor nights: 24 million, -8%;
    • Visitor spend: AUD3.7 billion (USD2.8 billion), +6%;
  • New Zealand:
    • Visitors: 1.2 million, +3%;
    • Visitor nights: 15.3 million, +4%;
    • Visitor spend: AUD2.7 billion (USD2 billion), +5%;
  • Singapore:
    • Visitors: 383,000, +15%;
    • Visitor nights: 6.2 million, +7%;
