The trans-Atlantic market has been a competitive marketplace, but recovery is still at an early stage.

Passenger traffic on long haul routes has – predictably – been weaker than on short haul routes during the COVID-19 pandemic. At times trans-Atlantic schedules had fallen to just one quarter of ‘normal’ levels during the health crisis, and they still remain a long way down on pre-pandemic levels.

Most airlines are betting on a significant rebound in trans-Atlantic travel in the summer of 2022 as pent-up demand will finally be unleashed, but in what will be a more competitive landscape, with new arrivals competing on product and price in both business and leisure markets.

The reopening of some of the most lucrative air routes in the world represents a big step forward, however:

  • How will the competitive environment take shape as that demand returns?

  • Could potential new virus variants threaten the rebound?

  • How big a slice of the pie will new entrants secure?

  • Will reduced business travel demand hurt airline yields?

Consumers are at the heart of Digital Transformation and the pandemic has only accelerated the shift to digital retailing and e-commerce, backed by sophisticated IT platforms. And we have seen how effective the non-travel online retailers, like Amazon, have been – and they’ve grown their wallet share substantially.

These new players have gathered more data and learned more about us over the past two years than ever before and the worry is, for a heavily indebted and struggling airline industry – can it keep up and regain its fair share of the ‘economic wallet’ and unlock new revenue streams, as well as meeting shifting customer needs.

Airlines are at a disadvantage in that their starting point are often ageing tech systems of IT platforms, software and hardware. Added to this, an ever-more demanding customer, who wants greater ticketing flexibility, instant refunds, better service, disruption recovery that’s fast and effective and a seamless online and journey experience. The digital experience expectation also extends into the role of the airline’s loyalty programme, as well as its alliances and partnerships.

Many airlines are falling behind in this digital arms race. But for those airlines that get it right and partner with the right providers, there can be rich rewards in being an effective player in a digital world – and that’s what we’ll be exploring today.

Grounded aircraft. Brexit. Global pandemics. Travel bans. Inconsistent testing, quarantines. Bankruptcy. Soaring inflation. War. Airspace restrictions. Trade sanctions. Pilot shortages. Labor strife. Delivery delays. Jet fuel spikes. Climate change.

Somehow, some way, airlines manage to navigate through this turbulence. How do airlines survive and thrive during such huge disruptions to travel demand and operations costs?

What are the keys to success in airline or aerospace government affairs? Is normalcy around the corner, and what will it look like? In this session, we’ll get insider tips for effective responses to crisis and events that can buffet smooth flying for the industry, with particular focus on the current state of the market  and how the industry can work with governments to:

  • Ensure more rapid, uniform responses from governments in assistance.

  • Advance methods for managing the COVID-19 virus as it evolves from a pandemic state to an endemic phase.

  • Minimize aviation’s impact on the environment.

  • Allow for consolidation and evolving ownership & control structures.

With little direct government support, despite tight travel restrictions, it has been a tough couple of years for the aviation sector across Latin America.

However, the sector has been relatively resilient and is forecast to experience a strong 2022, with limited travel restrictions and dynamic passenger flows within the region and to/from North America.

This will help traffic levels return to pre-pandemic levels in Central America in 2023 and South America in 2024, according to the latest International Air Transport Association (IATA) projections.

But, getting standardised rules for international travellers amid the coronavirus pandemic remains a biggest hurdle for Latin America’s airlines.

Governments across the Americas need to “fundamentally change their mindset” and the way that they collaborate with the aviation industry; otherwise the recovery will stall, IATA regional VP for the Americas Peter Cerda has said recently.

It is clear that the industry will need much smarter collaboration than ever before.

The fear is that governments across the region will default back to old habits. Over-regulation and damaging tax systems may appear effective tools for recovery, but they are counterproductive for airports, airlines and consumers.

Three of Latin America’s major airline groups – LATAM, Aeromexico and Avianca – are emerging from Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection. As they’ve been working to restructure during the past couple of years their low cost rivals have been preparing to bolster competition with those restructured operators.

Will these new dynamics influence the shape of the industry in the region and bring new opportunities for growth?

With an unprecedented crisis come unprecedented opportunities. It may sound counter-intuitive that at a time when an industry has contracted considerably due to the COVID-19 pandemic, strong consideration should be given to starting up a new business. But in fact there is evidence that it could actually be the perfect opportunity to turn a start-up idea into a reality.

There’s nothing like an actual crisis to uncover new pains and needs, or amplify an existing problem, or add a huge breadth of available talent, providing access to potential funding and cheap assets. And then the fact that any new business would be lean and minimise expenditure, preserve cash, and avoid corporate debt and you have a positive pathway to success.

In the aviation industry new airlines will cause more pain for incumbents.

As incumbent airlines of whatever colour are weighed down by debt and high costs, conditions are perfect for new entry: money is cheap, there is a glut of skills, and of cheap aircraft. Even airport slots are opening up.

The time is as right as it has ever been – but at a time when the incumbents can least afford it.

Since the coronavirus pandemic struck in early-2020 no less than 80 new airlines have prepared, or are in the throes of preparing, to operate. These new entrants will be fundamentally low cost and mostly narrowbody, supporting the latest trends in the industry.

While most of them are relatively small, many are well funded and more than sufficient to disrupt existing markets.

The questions remain:

  • What opportunities exist across North America and the Caribbean for potential new entrants?

  • How are some of the new arrivals performing and what progress are others making in reaching their goals to launch?

  • How do their prospects look as demand begins to rebuild?

Airlines are redefining their criteria to selected routes and they expect new support mechanisms from airports and service providers. Whether full service or LCC, focused on domestic or international, airlines across all business models have pivoted part of their networks during the pandemic as travel patterns have shifted.

The International Air Transport Association (IATA) has said that airlines have been “redefining their criteria to select routes and they expect new support mechanisms from airports and service providers” as they seek new network opportunities.

But will this be a permanent change?

Airlines have been creative with their network planning, launching new routes and chasing the existing demand, but whether these routes will remain part of their networks as the recovery process is yet to be seen.

  • What shifts are under way in the way that operators approach network planning in the near to medium term?

  • How will the slower recovery in business travel impact flight frequency as question marks remain over the scale of recovery in this area?

  • Will the strength of hubs be diluted by travellers seeking more point-to-point options?

  • Will changing fleet structures influence future network strategies?

  • Will sustainability become an increasing factor in the route selection criteria?

Avoiding reintroducing restrictive air travel measures that would jeopardise the recovery of the aviation and tourism industry will enable the Caribbean to maintain its recovery path.

The region is among the most tourism-dependent in the world, and that means it was particularly hit hard in 2020. However, it also recovered much faster than expected, although it is not expected to exceed 2019 traffic levels until 2025, according to IATA forecasts.

The Caribbean Tourism Hotel Association projected that travel and tourism’s contribution to gross domestic product would rise by almost half in 2021. Advance bookings of hotel stays and airline ticketing for 2022 also indicate a potential recovery to more than 70% of 2019 levels.

The Caribbean’s strong leisure focus will support an important influx of visitors in the short term, stimulating economic activity as tourists spend money on restaurants, hotels, retailers, tour operators, and on other consumer goods and services.

Islands across the region are investing in infrastructure and new resorts, hoping that their popularity as pandemic escapes can translate into returning visitors.

Some have already seen annual arrivals exceed the levels in 2019, with many travellers, particularly those from the United States, drawn to the Caribbean as a pandemic holiday spot for its proximity and relatively good record in curtailing COVID-19.

This focus means there is expected to be a continued high level of capacity deployed into the Caribbean from North and South America as well as Europe, These are all markets that are also enjoying an increasing freedom from restrictions and experiencing a strong return in demand.

A concern is that this could ultimately result in an oversupply, which will only damage the industry in the longer term.

  • Will a potential oversupply put increasing pressure on the industry?

  • Is there a need for Caribbean countries to come together and create some uniform regional travel guidelines?

Nikhil Goel co-founded the Uber Elevate urban aerial ridesharing team at Uber in 2015, which was sold to Joby Aviation in 2020. A technology and mobility investor and advisor, he has deep experience in aviation and the emerging urban air mobility (UAM) sector, having also worked with firms including Whisper Aero, Archer Aviation, FLYR Labs, Aero and SkySelect. Mr Goel has also served as a management consultant for travel and consumer technology companies at McKinsey & Company, and he held product roles at YouTube, Xbox, and Microsoft Office before founding two online marketplace startups.

UAM has been described as the new frontier of aviation. Using small vertical take off and landing aircraft powered by the latest electric technologies, it brings the promise of cheap, convenient air travel to millions, if not billions, of new users. The sector has the potential to not only transform mobility within large urban centres, but fundamentally reinvent short-haul aviation.

In the last decade, hundreds of start-up businesses have raised billions of dollars to support their goal of making mobility cheaper, easier and safer. To accomplish this, an entirely new aviation ecosystem is now under development. These companies are now racing with each other to lead the UAM sector and take the lead in an entirely new type of commercial air transport.

Globally, consumers, communities, corporations, and governments are focusing more intently than ever on the need to arrest growth in carbon emissions and ways to transition to a net-zero future.

Following a dramatic 2021 IPCC report, and the 2021 COP26 climate summit in Glasgow, there has been more pressure than ever for industries to demonstrate decarbonisation strategies and outcomes.

The airline industry is a prominent target, despite generating a relatively small 2.5% to 3.5% of the planet’s greenhouse gas emissions – but it is a conspicuous target.

In 2016 ICAO, supported by IATA, established CORSIA, the Carbon Offsetting and Reduction Scheme for International Aviation, which was arguably the first industry to target 2050 emission ceilings. As its name implies, the strategy combined reducing emissions, as well as offsetting them.

The industry now potentially faces interim 2030 targets as demands intensify to reduce emissions even faster. This will be an extreme challenge, as most of the anticipated technological solutions are not expected to occur until the 2030s and beyond.

In this session we hear from industry experts as they look to the future to determine when, and if, targets can be achieved.

  • What are the milestones that need to be met in the near term to reach those targets?

  • What are the biggest challenges the industry faces as it works towards meeting those ambitions?
