SESSION #1: ESTABLISHING A SUSTAINABLE ASIAN LCC

With Andrew Cowen

As aviation liberalisation continues to spread into North Asia, this is presenting many opportunities for new airlines to get established and gain a foothold in the market. In countries such as China, Japan, Vietnam and other countries around the Mekong delta, new competition is at last starting to bring down historically high fares, address poor service and expand the number of flight options, particularly on secondary and tertiary routes. In many emerging nations in North East Asia, this new competition is enabling significant numbers of people to fly who have never flown before, and is catalysing economic development and growth.

This Session will cover:

  • the liberalisation under way in North Asia
  • key economic fundamentals supporting the new entrants
  • the emerging new carriers and their key strategies
  • what the new carriers are doing to differentiate themselves in an increasingly competitive market
  • key infrastructure constraints and how these are being solved
  • the establishment of the longhaul LCC segment and prospects for this exciting new offering
  • potential future industry developments in the region.

SESSION #2: OPERATING AN EFFICIENT LCC - THE PITFALLS AND THE OPPORTUNITIES

With David Huttner

Many airlines declare themselves to be LCCs when in fact, they are simply low fare airlines. But only a small minority of airlines globally truly understands all the intricacies required to keep the costs at benchmark level and still drive the revenue and loads required to fill the seats and make a profit.

There is much more to this than increasing seating density and removing 'free' meals from the aircraft. While there is no universal definition of what is an LCC today, there are some key underlying principles that one will find in common with most consistently profitable LCCs.'

This Session will cover:

  • Who are the world's leading LCCs today and whether they have become 'more Southwest than Southwest'.
  • At what point does the LCC opportunity plateau? Recognising this is key to strategic planning.
  • Why LCCs can truly be LCCs even if one of the perceived 'core components', such as secondary airports may not be available in a particular market
  • Evolving and diverging from the traditional model; is there a clear economic case for these actions?

SESSION #3: THE VITAL ROLE OF PROCUREMENT AND COST SAVING
- THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN PROFITABILITY AND LOSING MONEY

With Richard Davis

While new LCCs are established and existing operators add capacity and services, the LCC model requires minimum cost for every new investment or re-investment.

The real work hard work is done behind the scenes where the procurement, legal and operations specialists work constantly to reduce cost to keep the business sustainable. Safety cannot be compromised in this never ending quest, but the commercial teams are constantly reviewing efficiencies and opportunities to reduce supplier cost and ongoing consumption of required goods and services - whether for fuel; airports; ground handling; engineering; parts pooling; catering; insurance; crew, training; compliance; and the myriad of other cost centres vital for the safe and smooth, yet low cost airline operation.

This Session will cover:

  • How commercial, procurement and legal teams can reduce cost
  • Drafting RFPs and conducting tenders
  • Ensuring your internal teams are actually presenting you with the best deals
  • Preparing to launch a route
  • Measuring costs - and actively reducing them
  • "Look after the pennies and the pounds will look after themselves" - the Culture
  • How motivating staff and crew to greater loyalty and productivity reduces cost and increases output
  • Enhancing internal processes to maximise benefits of procurement processes

SESSION #4: EXPERT PANEL CLOSING DISCUSSION

This Session will give a lively opportunity for workshop members to ask questions and challenge the full expert team of Andrew Cowen, David Huttner and Richard Davis in an informal environment.
