Mango is a South African low-cost airline and subsidiary of South African Airways. The carrier commenced operations in 2006. Mango is based at OR Tambo International Airport, South Africa and operates scheduled passenger services across a domestic route network. The carrier is a planned member under the Star Alliance Connecting Partner Model.
On 26-Jul-2021, South African Airways (SAA) interim CEO Thomas Kgokolo confirmed Mango will enter business rescue proceedings.
South Africa's Department of Public Enterprises (DPE) welcomed the judgement of the South African High Court on 10-Aug-2021 to place Mango under business rescue, effective 28-Jul-2021. The DPE stated the boards of South African Airways (SAA) and Mango took a resolution to place Mango under business rescue due to "financial and operational challenges".
Mango published its business rescue plan on 29-Oct-2021. A comprehensive project plan has been put in place for the airline to resume operations, ideally by Dec-2021. Mango will not form part of the South African Airways Group in future and no further government financial support will be directed to Mango.
In nov-2021, South African Airways (SAA) stated its board advised Mango's business rescue practitioners (BRP) that the proposal for Mango to resume operations in Dec-2021 "will place the airline in further financial difficulty as there is no working capital to fund Mango's business operations". The SAA board instead suggested that Mango's BRPs "should rather use available funds to restructure the airline and at the same time find on an urgent basis a strategic equity partner that will fund operations of the airline".
On 15-Nov-2021, Mango announced it will defer its resumption of operations until "the process of securing an investor has been concluded, with a preferred bidder having been identified".
