Japan Airlines VP: Outbound demand from Japan is 'gradually coming back'

Japan Airlines VP international route strategy Motohisa Abe, speaking at Routes Asia 2025, stated (25-Mar-2025) inbound international demand to Japan is strong, supported by the relatively weak yen, but outbound demand "is still very low". Mr Abe said outbound demand is "gradually coming back" and noted: "The market size is still big from Japan". He said the international passenger composition has "totally changed" from 70% Japanese and 30% foreigners prior to the COVID-19 pandemic to 30% Japanese and 70% foreigners since the pandemic.

Background ✨

Japan Airlines faced a slow recovery in outbound travel, hindered by the weak Japanese yen, which increased costs for outbound tourists and equipment procurement1 2. Domestic travel demand showed stronger recovery, returning to 90% of pre-COVID-19 levels by summer 20243 4. The international passenger demographic shifted significantly post-pandemic, with a majority of passengers now being non-Japanese5 6.
