Athens International Airport pax down 1% in Aug-2013, 'significant' growth in foreign pax in summer

Greece's Athens International Airport passenger numbers down 1% - traffic highlights for Aug-2013:

  • Passenger numbers: 1.5 million, -1.3% year-on-year;
    • Domestic: 467,618, -2.1%;
    • International: 1.0 million, -0.9%;
  • Aircraft movements: 15,743, -5.0%;

The airport also reported (06-Sep-2013) a 6.5% year-on-year increase in international passengers to 1.7 million and a load factor of 83% during the summer 2013 between May-2013 and Aug-2013. The number of destination passengers increased 11.6%. Meanwhile, the overall passenger traffic at Athens International Airport during summer fell 1.3% to 5.3 million, with this decline mainly driven by the low travelling demand by the Greek residents (-12,4%), who are highly affected by the economic situation of the country. The airport also noted growth from the UAE (+69%), as well as from non-EU countries (+22%), mostly driven by Switzerland (+41%) and Turkey (+27%). The Russian and Ukrainian markets continued to demonstrate an increasing trend. Foreign residents originating from long-haul destinations showed a significant recovery trend, especially those originating from Australia (19%), Canada (45%) and USA (9%).
