11-Jul-2017 Tigerair Australia Introduces "Fly Carbon Neutral" Offering Customers The Chance To Reduce Their Carbon Footprint When Flying

Tigerair Australia has today introduced the airline's Fly Carbon Neutral program, giving customers the opportunity to reduce their carbon footprint by offsetting their share of carbon emissions when flying.

Customers can choose to reduce their carbon footprint when flying with Tigerair, with the option available for purchase during the booking process or afterwards via the Manage My Booking function.

Prices are dependent on the route length, starting from $0.63 per person per sector for Tigerair's shorter flights and ranging to $4.85 per person per sector for the airline's longest services.

A guaranteed 100 per cent of this contribution will go to sustainable offset projects that are certified as Australian carbon credit units. Carbon offsetting involves investing in projects that prevent or reduce emissions being released, thus counterbalancing the emissions associated with customers' flights.

By flying carbon neutral with Tigerair, customers will be supporting the South East Arnhem Land Fire Abatement (SEALFA) project in Northern Australia, which uses strategic fire management activities to reduce the fire-generated emissions of greenhouse gas through back burning.

Wildfires account for 3-4% of Australia's greenhouse gas emissions, and those who choose to contribute will help Indigenous fire managers minimise this by reinstating traditional burning practices.

Tigerair Australia Head of Communications Vanessa Regan says the airline is pleased to introduce a carbon offset programme and support a very worthy cause at the same time.

"At Tigerair, we continue to look at ways to support local communities wherever we fly. We are proud to be able to support SEALFA and the great work they do, through the introduction of our Fly Carbon Neutral program."

"Under our program, seat emissions are calculated and an equivalent amount of carbon offset credits are purchased and retired, meaning emissions from that flight are neutralised."

Tigerair's Fly Carbon Neutral program is completely voluntary, allowing customers to make a personal choice to offset emissions when travelling Tigerair.
