Established in 2007, Tigerair Australia (formally Tiger Airways Australia) was a low cost carrier based at Melbourne Tullamarine Airport. Tigerair Australia utilised a fleet of narrowbody Airbus aircraft to operate a network of services within Australia. In Jul-2013, Virgin Australia Holdings Limited acquired a 60% stake in Tigerair Australia. The remaining 40% stake was acquired by Virgin Australia in late 2014.
In Aug-2020, Virgin Australia stated its Tigerair Australia brand will be discontinued in the market as there is not sufficient customer demand to support two carriers at this time. Tigerair Australia's AOC will be retained to support optionality to operate an ultra low cost carrier in the future when the domestic market can support it.
