South Korea's passenger numbers up 9% to 20m in 3Q2013, int'l pax up 8% to 14m

South Korea’s Ministry of Land, Transport and Maritime Affairs reports (25-Oct-2013) the following traffic highlights for the three months ended Sep-2013:

  • Passenger numbers: 20.1 million, +9.3% year-on-year;
  • International: 14 million, +8.3%;
    • Japan: 2.9 million, -7.8%;
    • China: 4.0 million, +24.8%;
    • Southeast Asia: 4.3 million, +9.7%;
    • Americas: 1.2 million, +5.6%;
    • Europe: 991,903, +4.8%;
    • Oceania: 439,496, +2.5%;
    • Others: 230,767, +13.5%;
    • By carrier:
      • Korean Air: 4.5 million, -2.1%;
      • Asiana Airlines: 3.2 million, +4.3%;
      • Air Busan: 240,000, +53.9%;
      • Eastar Jet: 290,000, +42.2%;
      • Jeju Air: 490,000, +49.5%;
      • Jin Air: 270,000, +4.5%;
      • T’way: 110,000, +23%.

According to the Ministry, South Korea’s full service carriers accounted for 64.4% of total international passengers in 3Q2013 while the nation’s LCCs accounted for 10% of the total international passengers, up 2.0 ppts. South Korea’s LCCs had a domestic market share of 48.3%, up 4.7 ppts.
