Inframerica returning Natal Airport concession due to low pax traffic, passenger fees and ATM fees
Corporación America Airports (CAA) stated (05-Mar-2020) a request by Inframerica to return the concession of Natal Aluízio Alves International Airport to the Brazilian Government was driven by several factors:
- Passenger traffic: Total passenger traffic was 2.3 million in 2019, compared to the expected 4.3 million as per the feasibility study. Passenger numbers have been negatively impacted by Brazil's adverse economic conditions over the past years and its effect on tourism;
- Passenger tariffs: On average 35% lower than all other privatised airports in the country;
- ATM fees: Other airports charge 301% higher than in Natal Airport, requiring CAA to make capital contributions to sustain the concession.
CAA CEO Martín Eurnekian stated: "The operation of this airport has become financially challenging, considering that it is not possible to modify the contractual terms under the current framework". [more - original PR]
