CFM International LEAP-1B engine achieves joint EASA/FAA certification

CFM International announced (04-May-2016) the LEAP-1B engine was simultaneously awarded Type Certificates by both the EASA and the US FAA, paving the way for entry into commercial service on the Boeing 737 MAX in 2017. CFM is the only engine manufacturer to gain dual original certification from both agencies, rather one lead agency issuing a type certification and the second agency validating that certification. This reflects CFM's 50/50 design and production structure between parent companies GE and Safran. The LEAP-1B engine flew for the first time on the Boeing 737 MAX on 29-Jan-2016. Since then, two more aircraft have been added to the test programme in Mar-2016. The three aircraft have logged a combined total of more than 100 test flights, including completing high altitude flight testing in La Paz recently. [more - original PR]
