Berlin Brandenburg Airport introduces 'BER Biometrics' for contactless travel

Berlin Brandenburg Airport introduced (02-Jul-2024) 'BER Biometrics' since 01-Jul-2024, enabling passengers departing from Terminal 1 to use facial recognition for contactless travel, without showing their boarding pass. The service follows a two week test phase, and includes printing baggage labels at selected self service machines, use of the 'BER Runway' with an extended time slot and access to the 'BER Tegel Lounge' after prior booking. Passengers must register via the SmartDepart app and provide a selfie, in order to use the service. A live image of the passenger is then taken on-site in the terminal, with the SmartDepart app then used for verification. The app provider will delete the matching data after the flight, while the stored passenger data remains in the app, which the user can manage independently at any time. The voluntary and free service is available for passengers aged 16 and over, and can be booked from seven days before departure. Implementation of the project's technical aspects, including software solutions, was carried out in collaboration with AirSphere, the provider of the airport's boarding pass control software.
