BAA scraps plans to submit a planning application for third runway at London Heathrow Airport

UK's BAA abandoned plans to submit a planning application for a third runway at London Heathrow Airport (The Sunday Times, 11-Oct-2009). The Conservative Party, which has expressed its opposition to the development, has reportedly been advised by BAA that it will respect the views of the party should they be elected into government, and will not sign contracts for the development of the runway. British Airways responded stating it plans to expand operations at Spain's Madrid Airport if a third runway is not committed to, stating it is currently too constrained at Heathrow (This is Money, 11-Oct-2009).
