Air Berlin announced (18-Oct-2011) plans to launch three times weekly non-stop Berlin-Los Angeles service in May-2012 and increase Berlin-New York JFK service from four times weekly to daily. The airline will be the only carrier on the Los Angeles route and is the only airline on the New York route. It codeshares with American Airlines on the New York sector. Mexico’s third largest airline, Interjet, recorded a surge in international passengers during 2016, reflecting the company’s desire to capitalise on a loosened bilateral agreement between the US and Mexico that eliminated restrictions on certain routes between the two countries. Interjet added several new routes to the US in 2016, upping competition with its Mexican rivals and the US airlines.
Based on Interjet’s aircraft delivery schedule and forward looking data, the airline’s capacity is set to grow at a healthy pace in 2017 as it absorbs new route launches from 2016 and expands its fleet. The airline logged 18.3% capacity growth in 2016.
Interjet is undertaking a significant US expansion as changing political tides are creating uncertainty about future travel patterns between Mexico and the US. Interjet asserts that business travel demand on its largest international route – Mexico City to New York JFK – remains robust, and the airline is expanding frequencies on the route.
But Mexico-US relations remain fragile in the light of uneasiness about changing trade pacts, and the heightened rhetoric over construction of a border wall between the two countries that was a hallmark of (now) President’s Trump campaign.
Norwegian Air: 10 new North Atlantic routes enabled by new narrowbody aircraft and price stimulation
Norwegian's long anticipated new trans Atlantic routes, to be launched in summer 2017, will add five airports in the UK and Ireland and three in the US to its existing long haul network. Norwegian already operates to eight US primary airports from London Gatwick. By using new narrowbody technology Norwegian is opening trans Atlantic travel to smaller cities that could not support widebody service.
The new trans Atlantic routes, the first to be operated by its Irish subsidiary NAI after receiving US rights late in 2016, will deploy new Boeing 737-8 MAX aircraft with a longer range than existing narrowbodies, and Norwegian is the European launch customer of the type.
In total there will be 10 new routes, comprising 38 weekly flights from Edinburgh, Belfast International, Cork, Shannon and Dublin serving three secondary airports on the US east coast. These are Stewart International (SWF), Providence (PVD) and Hartford Bradley International (BDL). These US airports are small and relatively unknown in Europe, and Norwegian will have to rely on price stimulation more than it has done on existing long haul routes. Nevertheless, Norwegian is once more leading the market with this innovation.
