Aeromexico Informs

Direct News Source

Aeromexico informs that it has indefinitely suspended its plans to open the Mexico City-Barcelona route which would have started next November. This decision is taken in light of the authorization of fifth freedoms granted to an airline of the United Arab Emirates, allowing them to offer flights between Mexico and Spain as if it were a Mexican airline. Said airline enjoys subsidies and benefits from its government, which constitute an unfair competition against the rest of the airlines in the industry. For this reason, our NAFTA business partners have taken a firm stance before these airlines: Canada has denied them fifth freedoms and the United States signed last Friday an agreement that condemns anticompetitive practices, prohibits subsidies, demands financial transparency and limits the grant of new fifth freedoms. Aeromexico promotes international competition, as demonstrated by our support for the modernization of the Open Skies agreement with the United States. We do not agree with unfair and subsidized competition, especially since it will result in the loss of Mexican jobs and weaken the connectivity of our country. Aeromexico regrets this action and will rethink its expansion plans to other markets where healthy competition among airlines is favored. The airline reiterates its commitment to partners, shareholders and customers to maintain a financially sound operation. Mexico's flagship airline will continue providing its customers with the best service to the main destinations in Mexico and the world.
