About

New Zamboanga International Airport is a proposed airport to be developed to replace the existing Zamboanga International Airport under the airport relocation project. The airport is currently under land acquisition phase. Construction is expected to commence in 2021.

Oct-2020. Mindanao Development Authority assistant secretary Romeo Montenegro reported construction of New Zamboanga International Airport in Zamboanga City would cost government around PHP13.9 billion (USD286.5 million). He said that around PHP200 million (USD4.1 million) has already been allocated to Zamboanga City's government for the acquisition of land for the the airport site, but actual construction has yet to commence. The project will feature a new terminal, six jet bridges, a control tower and will have a 3440m runway to accommodate heavier aircraft. Construction is expected to commence in 2021.

Mar-2018. Philippines' presidential spokesperson Harry Roque stated the government plans to relocate Zamboanga International Airport to a proposed site 17km away in Mercedes, Barangay City. Mr Roque added the relocation project will be completed in four to five years. The Department of Transportation and the Mindanao Development Authority have yet to release a feasibility study on relocating the airport.

Aug-2017. Zamboanga City Mayor Maria Isabelle Climaco-Salazar stated plans to develop a new airport in the city to replace Zamboanga Airport has been revived by the National Economic and Development Authority (NEDA), who will be recommending the project as a priority to the national government. The project is estimated to cost PHP9.87 billion (USD195 million). Several agencies including the Regional Development Council and the Philippines Department of Transportation proposed the relocation since 1992. The existing Zamboanga Airport is faced with land constraints that prevents it from further expansion.
