Benin plans to construct a new airport to replace the capital airport - Cotonou Airport. The project cost is estimated at CFA360 billion (USD617 million). The development of the new airport has been postponed as the Benin government stated it was no longer a high priority.
Jan-2022. Benin's Government Deputy Secretary General and spokesperson Wilfried Houngbedji stated the New Cotonou Airport project at Glo-Djigbé is no longer a high priority for the government, due to the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic.
Oct-2018. ADP Ingenierie, a subsidiary of Groupe ADP has been awarded two contracts for the construction of the 35,000sqm passenger terminal at the New Cotonou Airport. Group ADP also won an assistance contract for operations at the existing Cotonou Airport.
Jan-2018. Benin aims to replace Cotonou Airport with a new international airport in Glo-Djigbé situated 20km away, in the next four years. The EUR550 million/USD685 million project is expected to finish around the end of 2020, with preliminary work nearing completion. The new airport will be capable of handling 1.6 million passengers p/a, and will feature a 4.25km runway and a cargo terminal.
