About

The New Bhubaneswar Airport is a proposed second airport to serve the city of Bhubaneswar, Odisha. India's Government plans to construct a new international airport capable of handling widebody operations to serve the city, and support increased air travel demand to the region by 2022 or 2023. Construction costs have not been advised.

Jul-2021. Odisha's Commerce and Transport Minister Padmanabha Behera reported the state government aims to open New Bhubaneswar Airport in 2022 or 2023. Mr Behera confirmed Airports Authority of India officials inspected two potential sites selected by Odisha's Government at Puri in Jun-2021 for the new airport development project.

Nov-2019. India's Minister of Civil Aviation Hardeep Singh Puri reported Airports Authority of India (AAI) inspected three potential sites selected by Odisha's Government for the New Bhubaneswar Airport development project and "found them to be inadequate". Mr Puri said India's Government "is willing to cooperate and provide infrastructure" for the development of New Bhubaneswar, "but the state government has to provide the land".

Jul-2018. India's Minister of State for Civil Aviation Jayant Sinha informed the Rajya Sabha that Airports Authority of India (AAI) undertook a preliminary feasibility study of three sites near Khurda for the development of New Bhubaneswar Airport and submitted a report to the Odisha State Government. The planned airport will be designed to accommodate A380 and other widebody aircraft that cannot operate at nearby Bhubaneswar Biju Patnaik Airport.

Jun-2018. Airports Authority of India (AAI) identified three potential sites with a 25km radius of Bhubaneswar for the development of New Bhubaneswar Airport.

May-2018. India's Ministry of Civil Aviation stated it is undertaking site selection near Khurda for the development of a second airport to serve the city of Bhubaneswar, adding "The set up process will be fast tracked".

Sep-2017. Airports Authority of India (AAI) issued a proposal for the development a new international airport within 20-30km of Bhubaneswar Biju Patnaik Airport in Odisha to support increased air travel demand in the region. AAI estimates the Odisha State Government would need to procure 1500-2000 acres of land for the proposed airport development project. The resulting airport is expected to be equipped for widebody aircraft operations, unlike existing Bhubaneswar Airport.
