Lekki-Epe International Airport is an airport development project east of Lagos, Nigeria. The master plan has been completed and a 3500 hectare site for the airport has been secured. The airport is designed to handle five million passengers p/a with scope for future expansion.
Oct-2024.
21-Oct-2024. Nigeria Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA) called upon the Lagos State Government to submit an official declaration of intent prior to commencing construction of the proposed Lekki-Epe International Airport CAAN stated the declaration must be submitted 180 days before the construction of any air transport infrastructure including airports, aerodromes and other facilities.
17-Oct-2024. Nigeria's Lagos State Government announced "work has begun" on the Lekki-Epe International Airport construction project.
Sep-2024. Lagos State's Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu announced the government conducted discussions with Mota-Engil with a view to collaborating on the construction of Lekki-Epe International Airport.
Jul-2024. Nigeria's Lagos State Government announced plans to establish a sovereign investment fund for strategic investments including the construction of Lekki-Epe International Airport.
Feb-2024. Nigeria's Lagos State Government announced China Airport Construction Company (CACC) expressed its interest in partnering with the government in the construction of Lekki-Epe International Airport. Governor Sanwo-Olu said: "We plan to see if we can identify partners; real partners who understand our market, seek the potential of our market, and appreciate that it is a market that has the potential to grow and take the lead", adding: "We haven't made any final decision yet. We are hoping that we will be able to do that in the next couple of months so that we can push things forward".

07-Jan-2024. Nigeria's Lagos State Commissioner for Information and Strategy Gbengo Omotoso said the state government is seeking investment partners for the construction of Lekki-Epe International Airport. Mr Omotoso said the airport will be built on 3500 hectares of land with capacity to handle five million passengers p/a, with construction scheduled for completion before the end of 2025.
02-Jan-2024. Lagos State's Commissioner for Information and Strategy Gbenga Omotoso reported the state government aims to prioritise the Lekki-Epe International Airport development project in 2024. Mr Omotoso stated that Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu's NGN2.2 trillion (USD2.5 billion) infrastructure budget will support the project.
Oct-2022. Lagos State's Government confirmed it received authorisation from the Nigerian Government to commence development of a passenger and cargo airport in the Lekki-Epe area. The airport will be located on a 3500 hectare site and the first phase of the project is estimated to cost USD900 million. The Lagos State Government initiated the project through a public private partnership in response to commercial and industrial development in Lekki-Epe. The government said private consortia have expressed interest in the project. Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu stated: "This aviation infrastructure will reduce journey time and make commercial hubs in Lagos easily accessible". Minister for Aviation Hadi Sirika said the new airport will complement Lagos Murtala Muhammed International Airport. Mr Sirika stated: "There has been an expansion in Lagos, from Eko Atlantic City to Lekki Free Trade Zones. This growth necessitated the need for another airport in Lagos".
May-2015. The Lekki-Epe International Airport development project faces delay due to opposition by local land-holders to the land acquisition process, as well as delays in investors committing to the airport financing. Lagos State Commissioner for Commerce and Industry Sola Oworu confirmed the state government is “shopping for investors” and will recommence work on the project once new financing is in place. The state government is also returning some acquired land to 98 local villages, some of which had originally been acquired for a planned perimeter road.
Feb-2014. Lagos State Governor Babatunde Fashola reportedly said land acquisition and preparatory work for a new international airport in the state's Lekki region is complete and the government is seeking investment for the project.
