About
Lanna International Airport is a proposed development to serve the city of Chiang Mai. The new airport is expected to be constructed by 2030 on 11sqkm in the Ban Thi district of the adjacent province of Lamphun.
May-2024. Airports of Thailand (AoT) CEO Kirati Kitmanawat stated the feasibility study for Lanna International Airport is expected to be complete in 2024. Mr Kitmanawat said construction of the airport is due to commence by 2027. The feasibility studies will cover investment potential, economic gains, financial returns and environmental impacts.
Jan-2024. Thailand's Prime Minister Srettha Thavisin announced he visited Chiang Mai Province to hear a progress report on the construction of Lanna International Airport.
Sep-2023. Thailand's Prime Minister confirmed government will build a second airport in Chiang Mai named Lanna International Airport. The second airport aims to resolve capacity constraints at Chiang Mai International Airport and increase tourism to Chiang Mai. Further details include:
- Construction of the new airport is estimated to cost around THB70 billion (USD1.93 billion) and will take seven years to complete;
- Once the airport is constructed, it is expected to generate approximately THB3 billion (USD82.82 million) in annual profits and accommodate up to 20 million passengers p/a;
- Compensation measures are in place, including offering repairs for homes affected ranging from THB100,000 (USD2760) to THB300,000 (USD8282). Airports of Thailand may also buy affected homes at a fair market price;
- The airport will be constructed on 11sqkm in the Ban Thi district of the adjacent province of Lamphun.
May-2018. Airports of Thailand's board approved plans to develop new airports in Phuket and Chiang Mai, requiring approximately THB120 billion (USD3.7 billion) and to be operational by 2025. Chiang Mai's new airport will be located in Lamphun Ban Thi. The airport location is approximately 25km from existing airport.
