About

Al-Qadisiyah Airport, also known as Diwaniya Cargo Airport, is a proposed airport construction project for the Governate of Al-Qadisiyah, in the south central region of Iraq. Al-Qadisiyah governor Khalil Jalil Hamza received Iraqi Central Government approval to develop the new airport on a 2.7sqkm site in the southern part of the province.

Dec-2022. Iraq's Government reportedly plans to complete construction on Al-Diwaniya International Commercial Airport in the near future. The airport is to be built on a seven million sqm site and will feature a 3600m runway. Work on the airport began in 2015 when Iraq's National Investment Commission (NIC) awarded Al-Nasiriyah Kuwait Company a USD1.35 billion contract to construct the airport. NIC has since reclaimed the project due to Al-Nisiriyah's failure to complete construction. If completed, the airport would be Iraq's first dedicated cargo airport.

Feb-2015.

12-Feb-2015. Iraq's Al-Diwaniya International Commercial Airport will be the first nucleus for development in Diwania province and the first project in Iraq for air cargo plus a free zone with logistics services. Al-Diwaniya will focus on attracting logistics companies and international cargo agents. The new airport will be built adjacent to a railroad linking the capital Baghdad with Basrah, the main port of Iraq. The airport will cover around 700ha and will have a 3600m runway. The total cost for the cargo-only airport is estimated at around USD1.35 billion.

01-Feb-2015. Al-Nasriyah Engineering Company CEO Sheikha Eman said he anticipates that the new Diwaniya Airport and its associated aerotropolis to be built in southern Iraq will “attract additional investments into Iraq and foster the further development of closer economic and political ties between Iraq, Kuwait and the rest of the Gulf Cooperation Council member states”. The airport will open in late 2017 and construction will be completed in three stages over five years. Ground breaking for the first phase will take place in mid-2015.

Jan-2015.

21-Jan-2015. Iraq’s National Investment Commission, the Diwaniya Governorate and Al Nasriyah signed a contract for the construction of Diwaniya Cargo Airport. The USD1.35 billion airport will be operated by Al Nasriyah under a 45-year term. The airport will be constructed on a 17,500sqm site with a similar area allocated for future expansion.

11-Jan-2015. Diwaniya Governor Ammar al-Madani met with Iraq's Ministry of Electricity to discuss the viability of establishing Diwaniya Cargo Airport and the necessary improvements to the electricity power distribution grid and establishing power transformation stations to support the project.

Dec-2014. Diwaniya Trade Airport proposal approvals have been received according to Diwaniya Governor Ammar Al Madani. Governor Al Madani said, “All the consents from different Ministries have been acquired to construct the project and what is needed now is the approval of the Council of Ministers to start works on the project”.
