Imam Khomeini International Airport serves the metropolitan area of Tehran, Iran. Tehran is one of the largest urban areas in the Middle East and a major industrial and commercial centre, and Imam Khomeini International is a major aviation hub and transfer point in the region. The airport serves as the main hub for Iranian carriers including Iran Air, Caspian Airlines, Mahan Air and Meraj Airlines. The carriers operate to destinations in the Middle East, North Africa, Europe, the CIS, the Indian Subcontinent and South East Asia. Imam Khomeini International is operated by Imam Khomeini Airport City Company, a state-owned entity under Iran's Ministry of Roads and Urban Development.
