Single European Sky ATM Research (SESAR)
About
Single European Sky ATM Research (SESAR) is a technological programme introduced by the European Union (EU) that aims to improve Air Traffic Management (ATM) performance by modernising and harmonising ATM systems within Europe. Under the Single European Sky initiative, the EU plans to reform the European ATM in order to cope with sustained air traffic growth. The European ANS network covers 10.8 million sq km of airspace, 37 air navigation service providers (ANSPs) or member states, 16,900 air traffic controllers and 60 control centres. European Union and EUROCONTROL have each pledged EUR700 million to the development of the EUR2.1 billion SESAR programme. The industry is expected to cover remaining costs of the project.
Established in 2007, the SESAR Joint Undertaking (SESAR JU) is a public-private partnership body responsible for the implementation of the ATM Master Plan and for carrying out specific activities aimed at developing the new air traffic management system. It coordinates research and development efforts undertaken by SESAR members.
