Rolls-Royce and Thai Airways International celebrate decade of Trent 800 operations

Seattle (ROLLS ROYCE) - Rolls-Royce today celebrated a decade of service for the Trent 800 engine on the Boeing 777 with the engine’s launch customer, Thai Airways International.

Speaking at a special ceremony in Bangkok held to mark the anniversary, Rolls-Royce Chairman Simon Robertson said: “Thai Airways International will always be assured of a special place in the history of Rolls-Royce as the airline which launched the Trent 800 in 1996.

“In the early days of this new engine series, THAI placed its trust in our capability, and from that has grown an excellent and highly valued partnership.”

The ceremony was attended by His Royal Highness the Duke of York in his role as Britain’s special representative for international trade and investment.

Thai Airways International was represented by its Chairman of Executive Board, Somchainuk Engtrakul, and the airline’s President, Flt. Off. Apinan Sumanaseni.

Rolls-Royce engines currently power approximately 30 per cent of THAI’s fleet, with 14 Boeing 777s using the Trent 800, and eight latest-generation Airbus A340s, using the the Trent 500 engine. Further deliveries to THAI will take the totals to 20 Boeing 777s and ten A340s.

The Trent 800 and Trent 500 are members of the Rolls-Royce Trent family of engines, which also includes the Trent 900.

The Rolls-Royce Trent 900 is the lead engine for the Airbus A380 development programme and is currently powering four aircraft in flight-testing. Rolls-Royce has been selected by seven out of the eleven A380 airline customers who have so far announced an engine choice.

THAI has not yet made an engine selection for its order of six A380s, deliveries of which are due to begin in 2009.
