Philippines airport contract underway
Airservices Australia has commenced a multi-million contract to install an air navigation system for the new Bacolod airport, Silay City in the Philippines Republic.
Chief Executive Officer Greg Russell said Airservices was undertaking the contract in association with Japanese firm Toshiba Plant System and Services Corporation for prime construction contractor Takenaka Corporation.
“We will project manage the navigation system installation including engineering, procurement, commissioning of the radio navigation aids, air traffic control and telecommunications and meteorological system”, he said.
Toshiba will deliver the airport’s aeronautical ground lighting.
Mr Russell said Airservices had already opened a site office at Silay employing six Filipino engineers and administrative staff supported by Airservices aviation systems engineers.
He said the project was the first off-shore airport construction project to be delivered by the Corporation.
The $106 million airport, funded by the Japan Bank for International Cooperation and the Philippines Government, is planned to open in January next year, Mr Russell said.
“It is designed to handle over one million passengers and some 17,000 tonnes of cargo a year and is being built to handle tourism and business growth in the central Philippines Negros and Cebu Islands region.”
