Montenegro joins EUROCONTROL
Montenegro joined (01-Jul-07) EUROCONTROL, becoming its 38th
Member State.
The State Union of Serbia and Montenegro joined EUROCONTROL
on 01-Jul-05. Following the independence of Montenegro in Jun-06, the new State
submitted its application for membership to EUROCONTROL on 13-Feb-07. The application
was unanimously accepted by the Organisation's supreme policy-making body,
the Permanent Commission, on 03-May-07.
Montenegro has been a member of ICAO since 14-Mar-07.
"The addition of Montenegro to EUROCONTROL brings added value to the integration of the air traffic management system in the Balkan region," said Víctor M. Aguado, Director General of EUROCONTROL. "Given the growth in traffic that we expect in the region over the coming years, this is of great strategic importance and will be crucial in enabling the development of regional cooperation."
Air navigation services in Montenegro's airspace will continue to be provided by the joint Serbian-Montenegrin air navigation service provider SMATSA, while CAA Montenegro is the new regulatory authority.
Montenegro's two international airports, Podgorica and Tivat, play a key role in the development of tourism on the Adriatic coastline and economic prosperity in the region.
