Ibaraki Airport is a new international airport serving the Greater Tokyo metropolitan area, located 80 km northeast of central Tokyo. The airport is the smallest of three commercial airports serving the region. It was, until Mar-2010, a military air base. Ibaraki Airport is one of Japan's first low-cost airports, marketing itself as an alternative to high-cost Narita and Haneda. Ibaraki has substantially cheaper airport charges than competing Tokyo airports, has no air bridges and has a terminal designed for quick turnaround times and passenger throughput. Ibaraki currently handles charter service to the USA (Guam), the Philippines, China and Taiwan. Asiana Airlines operates scheduled service to Seoul Incheon.
