US Travel Association reports domestic market growth and international inbound decline in Jul-2019

US Travel Association reported (04-Sep-2019) travel to and within the US increased 3.2% year-on-year in Jul-2019. Highlights are as follows:

  • Domestic market: Expanded 3.8% in Jul-2019. Business travel experienced 2.2% growth, compared to its 0.2% decline in Jun-2019, while leisure travel increased by 4.2%, in line with its previous growth of 3.8% in Jun-2019. The Leading Travel Index (LTI) projects domestic travel will expand 2% through Jan-2020;
  • International market: Inbound travel fell by 1.2%, following the same trend of below zero seen in Jun-2019. The LTI forecast international inbound travel growth will remain at approximately -0.4% for the next six months.

US Travel Association SVP of research David Huether noted the "solid performance" of the domestic leisure and business segments, which accounts for 86% of the US travel economy, has "kept the travel expansion on track through the first seven months of 2019" and acted as a "bulwark against the stagnant state of international inbound travel".
