US scheduled airlines net profit up 39% in 2Q2019, net profit margin improves to 9.3%

US Department of Transportation's Bureau of Transportation Statistics (16-Sep-2019) the following financial highlights for US scheduled service passenger airlines for the three months ended Jun-2019:

  • Operating revenue: USD51.6 billion
    • Domestic: USD38.8 billion;
      • Airfare: USD27.7 billion;
      • Baggage fees: USD1.1 billion;
      • Reservation change fees: USD529 million;
    • International: USD12.8 billion;
      • Airfare: USD10.6 billion;
      • Baggage fees: USD381 million;
      • Reservation change fees: USD211 million;
  • Operating expense: USD44.7 billion;
    • Domestic: USD32.5 billion;
      • Labour: USD11.1 billion;
      • Fuel: USD5.9 billion;
    • International: USD11.1 billion;
      • Labour: USD4.1 billion;
      • Fuel: USD2.8 billion;
  • Net profit: USD4.8 billion, +39% year-on-year;
    • Domestic: USD3.6 billion, +38%;
    • International: USD1.2 billion, +43%;
  • Net profit margin: 9.3%, +2.3ppts;
