Qantas to be leader in Asia Pacific airline consolidation - CEO

Qantas CEO, Alan Joyce, stated he believes consolidation will occur in the Asia Pacific region and the carrier has the financial capability to take a lead role (The Australian/The Courier-Mail, 22-Apr-2010). However, Mr Joyce stated it is likely it would take a decade until there was significant change in the region's airline industry, due to the "outdated" regulatory environment. Mr Joyce added that in any consolidation move, Qantas would retain its name and brand.

Qantas:
"I think Qantas could, with its balance sheet and financial strength, be the leader in consolidation in this region. But it needs regulatory changes because the regulatory environment is such that it's very hard to do consolidations, it's very hard to do mergers in the aviation industry," Alan Joyce, CEO.
