Munich Airport launches environment scheme in bid to become first carbon neutral airport in Germany

Munich Airport management company Flughafen Munchen GmbH (FMG) announced (07-Dec-2016) a new climate protection scheme for the facility to become the first carbon neutral airport in Germany. The plan aims to reduce CO2 emissions directly attributable to the airport by 60% by 2030, with EUR150 million to be invested on sustainability measures through 2030. The remaining 40% of emissions will be accounted for via carbon offsets. The scheme will include:

  • New external lighting and LED runway lighting;
  • Energy supply changes;
  • Commissioning an environmentally friendly vehicle fleet;
  • Optimisation of baggage handling power consumption.

Munich Airport's CO2 levels in 2015 were 30,000 tonnes lower than in 2005, despite a 43% traffic growth during the period. According to ACI EUROPE's Airports Carbon Accreditation, there are currently 24 carbon neutral accredited airports in five countries, representing 15.5% of European air passenger traffic.
