About

Munich Airport is the main gateway to Munich and one of the largest airports in Germany. It is a hub for Star Alliance, oneworld and SkyTeam and hosts over 100 passenger and cargo airlines including Lufthansa and Condor. The airport is operated by FMG, founded in 1949. FMG has three shareholders, the Free State of Bavaria (51%), the Federal Republic of Germany (26%) and the City of Munich (23%).

Munich Airport has two terminals, with Terminal 2 opening in 2003. The terminal is jointly operated by Lufthansa and Munich Airport and since 2011 has been exceeding its capacity limit of 25 million passengers. As a result, Lufthansa and Munich Airport constructed a satellite facility for Terminal 2 to cater for the growth. As with Terminal 2, the ownership and investment costs for the building were be shared by the two companies on a 60:40 basis. With this satellite, the airport increased handling capacity by an additional 11 million passengers per annum. The building has no landside transportation links. Instead, an underground passenger transport system links Terminal 2 and the satellite in less than a minute. The satellite facility was completed in Apr-2016. In light of this overall growth, Munich Airport is also planning on constructing a third runway, which would increase aircraft usage to 120 movements/hour.
