Long-term approach essential in aviation industry due to 'very long lead times' of decisions

Qantas Group CEO Alan Joyce, speaking at the CAPA Australia Pacific Aviation Summit, said (05-Aug-2016) a long-term approach is essential to the aviation industry due to "very long lead times" involved in a lot of decisions. Mr Joyce provided the example of fleets: "It is a 30 year decision. It'll be about five years before the manufacturer delivers the aircraft and you might fly that aircraft for 25 years," adding: "The A380 is a great example of that for me, that decision was made under James Strong in 1999 and the first aircraft didn't arrive till the last month of Geoff Dixon." Mr Joyce continued: "I took delivery of 12 aircraft during my time as CEO and those aircraft will be operating well into the term of the next CEO and probably the one after that."
