Koala Airlines founder and CEO Bill Astling said it secured lease agreements for three Boeing 737 MAX aircraft due for delivery in 2026, and it considered operating as a feeder carrier for foreign tourists to access destinations beyond Brisbane, Melbourne and Sydney.1 He also said Koala Airlines remained on track to start operations in late 2026 and pursued a model distinct from Qantas and Virgin Australia.2 The ACCC said interest from Koala Airlines and Zinc could improve outcomes via greater choice and downward pressure on fares, although it cited material execution and regulatory hurdles.3 Koala Airlines later said it held discussions with key industry participants but did not comment on speculation or confidential talks, while remaining committed to a credible third airline presence in Australia.4
