IndiGo head of planning and revenue management: Trends remain supportive of aviation growth in India

IndiGo head of planning and revenue management Abhijit DasGupta, speaking at Routes Asia 2025, stated (26-Mar-2025) "India has been a bright spot in aviation growth" for at least a decade and a half and the economic trends driving this growth are expected to continue. Mr DasGupta said there is no suggestion that India's "explosion" in GDP per capita will slow materially, driven by a "huge" and growing middle class with the financial appetite to consume air travel. He also noted that economic and social dynamics are becoming more dispersed around India, with more people working and studying away from home, driving domestic VFR traffic, and more travel for medical, religious, leisure and business reasons. Mr DasGupta said these trends are also starting to play out in the international sector, with a "similar inflection point in regional international travel" as more people are able to consume such trips.

Background ✨

IATA projected India would become the third largest air traffic market within a decade, driven by a growing middle class and favourable economic conditions1 2. Domestic travel was anticipated to account for about 63% of the total growth1. Policy developments, such as liberalisation, could significantly impact growth rates, potentially leading to a market of up to 900 million passengers by 20373. Population growth and increasing incomes were expected to continue supporting robust aviation market growth4 2.
