IATA: Global traffic up 10% in Jan-2025, accelerating further
IATA reported (27-Feb-2025) global traffic in RPKs increased 10% year-on-year in Jan-2025, further accelerating and returning to a double digit pace after seven months. Capacity in ASKs increased 7.1% and load factor increased 2.2pp to 82.1%, an all time high for January. IATA director general Willie Walsh stated: "We've seen a notable acceleration in demand this January, with a particularly strong performance by carriers based in the Asia-Pacific region. The record high load factors that accompany this strong demand are yet another reminder of the persistent supply chain issues in the aerospace sector". Details include:
- International traffic increased 12.4% and capacity increased 8.7%;
- Domestic traffic increased 6.1% and capacity increased 4.5%;
- Among the regions, only Latin American carriers saw a lower load factor in January, as RPK growth was outpaced by ASKs;
- Asia Pacific carriers contributed to more than half of the net increase in industry total passenger traffic (56.6%), which is higher than previously observed. The remaining regions experienced stable growth, which left their contribution to total growth nearly unchanged. [more - original PR]
Background ✨
Asia Pacific carriers played a significant role in global traffic growth for Jan-2025, with a 22.5% increase in RPKs and a load factor of 83.7%1. This followed a strong performance in 2024, where Asia Pacific contributed more than half of the RPK growth, driven by a resurgence in international traffic2. Despite high growth rates, certain Asia Pacific routes recorded lower traffic levels compared to pre-pandemic figures due to reduced demand from China and geopolitical tensions3.
