Europe faced policy and investment barriers that stalled commercial-scale e-SAF production, with no facility reaching final investment decision as of early 2026, despite industry calls for urgent regulatory and financial support to unlock projects and bridge cost gaps with fossil jet fuel1 2 3. Synthetic fuels were absent from the EU's 2024 fuel mix, and achieving future blending mandates will require scaling both renewable electricity supply and e-SAF capacity4 5.
