Hokkaido Airports focusing on summer travel to grow international business

Hokkaido Airports GM aviation business development Keikou Venske, speaking at Routes Asia 2025, stated (26-Mar-2025) Hokkaido Airports needs to focus on summer travel to grow its international business, noting that international passenger numbers in winter are twice the level as in summer. Ms Venske said it is "challenging for us to manage that traffic" as the company cannot double its facilities in winter then shrink in summer. She said the company aims to achieve more even levels of demand throughout the year and grow the number of repeat visitors.

Background ✨

Sapporo Chitose Airport experienced significant growth, handling 22.9 million passengers in FY2023/24, with international traffic surging by 310% to 2.9 million passengers1. The trend of travellers shifting from shopping to personal experiences in Japan has been noted, with repeat visits to Hokkaido increasing from 40% in 2011 to 52% in 20232. These changes suggest potential for Hokkaido Airports to balance seasonal demand and attract repeat visitors.
