Background

Eurowings previously signalled cost pressure in Germany, planning to cut domestic flying in winter 2025/26 and already removing Hamburg-Nuremberg/Cologne and Dortmund-Munich from its schedule1. It also planned a 2025 capacity reduction at Hamburg, cutting 1000 flights, with CEO Jens Bischof citing planned airport charge increases and warning of further route closures amid rising infrastructure and location costs2. Eurowings simultaneously pursued growth in Berlin, with CEO Max Kownatzki outlining an increase from three to nine based aircraft under its ‘Capital Express’ concept3.
