Dubai Duty Free sales up 16% in 1H2010

Dubai Duty Free reported a 16% year-on-year increase in sales to USD607 million in 1H2010 (Gulf Today/DFNIonline, 21-Jul-2010). The airport retail operator reported USD1.1 billion in sales in 2009, making it the largest global airport retail operator for the second consecutive year, accounting for 3.3% of total global duty free and travel retail sales and 5.5% of airport duty free sales. The retailer maintains its top position ahead of London Heathrow and Seoul Incheon. Global duty free and travel retail registered a 6.8% decline in sales to USD34.5 billion in 2009 while duty free and travel retail sales in the Middle East went against the trend, registering a 3% growth to USD2.5 billion during the period.

DDF: "We are obviously delighted to retain the number one spot for the second consecutive year. It is extremely positive that the Middle East witnessed an increase in sales and has grown its market share of the global duty free and travel-retail business. Based on our sales of USD1.14 billion, we are pleased that Dubai Duty Free, as a single operator, now accounts for 3.3% of the global duty free and travel-retail sales and 5.5% of the airport duty free business."
