13-Nov-2009 Delegations from the United States and the European Community and its Member States met in Brussels on 9-11 November 2009 for a fifth round of negotiations on a second stage air transport agreement.

Both delegations expressed their satisfaction at the progress made across a range of important issues, including security, regulatory cooperation and the role of the Joint Committee. Both delegations also noted the in-depth discussions held on other elements of a second stage agreement, such as market access, cooperation on environmental issues and the social dimension of the agreement.

Further work remains in these and other key areas such as investment and environmental constraints. Both sides also highlighted the goal set out in the agreement - and recently reiterated at the EU-U.S. Summit on 3 November - of reaching in 2010 a second stage air transport agreement which includes benefits for both sides.

A further round of negotiations will be held in Washington, D.C. in the week of 11 January 2010.
