British Airways in talks regarding possible bid for bmi; Virgin Atlantic interest in bmi remains

British Airways is reportedly considering a possible bid for bmi, with the carrier reportedly holding talks with Lufthansa regarding a potential acquisition (Reuters, 06-Sep-2009). However, British Airways reportedly stated than any agreement with Lufthansa would be secondary to the carrier's continuing merger talks with Iberia. British Airways is reportedly considering financing a move for bmi through a share issue. Virgin Atlantic, meanwhile, stated it remains interest in bmi (Reuters, 06-Sep-2009). The carrier held discussions with Lufthansa "regarding the future" of bmi last year.

Virgin Atlantic: "They are trying to gain more slots, wipe out rivals and become a pure monopoly. The logical tie-up for bmi is with a long-haul carrier like Virgin Atlantic.' Lufthansa only took control of bmi this year, but now it wants to shed the carrier or break it up as it attempts to strengthen its finances," Paul Charles, Director of Communications.
