Airport Authority commence construction on HKIA 3RS

Airport Authority Hong Kong commenced (01-Aug-2016) construction on Hong Kong International Airport's (HKIA) three runway system (3RS). The eight-year project includes a new runway due to complete in 2022, a passenger building with 57 aircraft parking positions and connected to Terminal 2 via an automated people mover system, T2 upgrades to provide full departure and arrival services, new high-speed baggage handling system and expanded road and transportation networks. Upon completion in 2024, the 3RS will be able to handle 30 million passengers p/a, bringing the total airport capacity to 100 million passengers and nine million tonnes of cargo p/a. In tandem with the launch of 3RS construction, the airport authority will commence collection of airport construction fee on air tickets issued on or after 01-Aug-2016 for departing passengers at HKIA.
