Update - pause on quarantine-free travel from Melbourne to New Zealand

The New Zealand Government has now approved Air New Zealand to operate quarantine-free flights from Melbourne to New Zealand, from Wednesday 9 June 2021, for the following passengers:

  • New Zealand citizens.
  • New Zealand permanent residents.
  • Australian citizens who normally reside in New Zealand.
  • People with humanitarian exemptions.
  • Critical workers who are stranded in Victoria.

Information on who qualifies for a humanitarian exemption or critical worker will be updated on the New Zealand Government website.

The following flights have now been released for sale in your GDS and are available to book:

  • 9 & 10 June 2021
    MEL-AKL NZ124 & NZ126

All passengers on these flights will be required to:

  • Present evidence of a negative COVID-19 test taken within 72 hours of departure to New Zealand. The type of COVID-19 test that is required can be found here. Passengers should also keep evidence of the negative test throughout their journey.
  • Complete the Nau Mai Rā, New Zealand travel declaration form.
  • Complete the health declaration at the airport to confirm they did not visit a location of interest.

In addition to the above, the New Zealand Government has also approved the following options for travellers:

  • Effective immediately, travellers who have been in Victoria but outside the Greater Melbourne area from 27 May (5.59 AEST), can travel to New Zealand from another state within Australia, provided they present evidence of a negative COVID-19 test taken within 72 hours of departure to New Zealand.
  • Effective 4 June 2021 (9.59pm AEST), travellers who were in Victoria but outside the Greater Melbourne area between 20-27 May (9.59pm AEST), can travel to New Zealand from another state within Australia, provided they present evidence of a negative COVID-19 test taken within 72 hours of departure to New Zealand.
  • Effective 9 June 2021, travellers who have been in the Greater Melbourne lockdown area after 9:59pm AEST 27 May, will be permitted to return on a green flight, provided they present evidence of a negative COVID-19 test taken within 72 hours of departure and meet the criteria listed above.

The following travellers are currently not permitted to travel to New Zealand within
14 days of exposure:

  • Travellers who have been at a Victoria location of interest from 11 May 2021.
  • Travellers who have been at a NSW location of interest between 19-24 May 2021.

Travellers must follow advice on the Victoria or New South Wales Government websites.

For customers who have travel booked between 4-7 June 2021

  • Air New Zealand has made contact with customers who have contact details in their PNR to let them know how their flights are affected and their options for rebooking.
  • Customers with bookings from regional New Zealand booked to travel to Melbourne over this time will be re-accommodated to travel via Auckland.
  • PNRs will not be updated with a TK/UN status.
  • Please visit the flight disrupt grid for the most up to date information on flights during this time.

For customers who have travel booked between 8-10 June 2021

  • Air New Zealand has made contact with customers who have contact details in their PNR to let them know how their flights are affected and their options for rebooking.
  • Customers with bookings from regional New Zealand booked to travel to Melbourne over this time will be re-accommodated to travel via Auckland.
  • Customers affected by Auckland - Melbourne cancellations will be rebooked onto the next available Auckland - Melbourne service.
  • PNRs will be updated with a TK/UN status.
  • These changes have been rolled out to your GDS.

For customers with travel booked and ticketed up to and including 3 June 2021, who have travel to/from or via Melbourne between 27 May-10 June 2021 have the following flexibility options.

  • One change is permitted with the change fee waived.
  • For rebooking to travel before 25 June 2021 on Air New Zealand operated flights, no additional collection applies. Book the same or next best available booking class in the same cabin and/or product type. If the change requires a requote or a reissue any additional taxes must be collected.
  • For travel on other airlines, please book the same booking class, if this is not then the fare difference applies.
  • Tickets can be held in credit as per the COVID-19 Flexibility Guide.
