02-May-2017 New Zealand is the cover story of the Chinese edition of National Geographic Traveler this month.

The 16-page feature story called Green Pass New Zealand showcases the weird and wonderful wildlife of the lower South Island and beautiful photographs of Dunedin and Southland coasts and Rakiura/Stewart Island.

The highlight is the stunning photography from China's top wildlife photographer Xi Zhinong, who took photos of penguins, kea and tuatara. The visit was arranged by Tourism New Zealand.

Tourism New Zealand General Manager Asia David Craig said the feature story showed there is significant interest in New Zealand beyond the well-known tourist areas of Queenstown and Auckland.

"Having New Zealand on the cover of such a prestigious and well-read publication is really important. The readers are the perfect target market - high-value free independent travellers who will get out into the lesser-visited areas like Southland and Dunedin.

"A lot of work went into organising this and it's great to see such a fantastic finished product. The National Geographic Traveller team really enjoyed their time in New Zealand and it shows.

"Tourism New Zealand is working hard to encourage tourists to visit new regions and come in the shoulder season. This feature ticks both those boxes."

Photographer Xi Zhinong said: "During my trip in NZ, everyone I met and every place I visited, I was left with the impression that nature and environment is deeply rooted in New Zealanders' value system and their lifestyle."
