Melbourne Airport achieved 11 per cent international growth in May compared to the same period last year, to reach 603,398 international passengers.
Melbourne Airport CEO, Chris Woodruff, said Japan continued to be a leading growth market.
"The strong growth of the Japanese market in May shows that people are taking advantage of Jetstar's Melbourne-Japan service which commenced in late April. As the first direct Melbourne-Japan service in more than five years, passengers now have more choice and convenience," said Mr Woodruff.
"International passenger growth in May was also boosted by two global conferences, the World Congress of Cardiology and the International Congress of World Federation of Haemophilia, both held at the Melbourne Convention Bureau. These two conferences alone brought more than 10,000 delegates to our city and injected more than $50 million into local businesses and our state economy, demonstrating just how valuable our global events calendar is for our state."
Over the next 20 years, Melbourne Airport will be transformed and up to $10 billion will be invested as Victoria's aviation gateway is expanded and upgraded.
In May approximately $50 million, three times the amount spent in May last year, was invested on projects including: the new Airport Drive; expansion of the airline, transit and bussing lounges; improvements to the international terminal; a new domestic terminal; significant airfield capacity works and a tri-generation energy production plant.
These investments support approximately 3,000 construction related roles at the airport.
